In Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the children are taught to develop the characteristics for effective learning (COEL).  These characteristics are developed through:

  • Playing and exploring
  • Active learning
  • Creating and thinking critically.

Our EYFS provision is designed to help children become, independent, enthusiastic and happy learners whilst forming positive relationships.  The environment allows them to take risks and challenge themselves, whilst keeping them safe and healthy.  Our curriculum is delivered both indoors and outdoors through guided and independent learning.

Our curriculum is organised around three prime areas and four three specific areas of learning.

Prime areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language – Listening, Attention and Understanding and Speaking
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Self-Regulation, Managing Feelings and Building Relationships
  • Physical Development – Gross Motor Skills and Fine Motor Skills

Specific areas of learning:

  • Literacy – Comprehension, Word Reading and Writing
  • Mathematics – Number and Numerical Patterns
  • Understanding – Past and Present, People, Cultures and Communities and The Natural World
  • Expressive Art and Design – Creating with Materials, Being Imaginative and Expressive.

We carry out a baseline assessment with every child when they begin EYFS and from these assessments we design a curriculum which builds on prior knowledge, skills and understanding.  We ensure that the children have access to high quality teaching and learning allowing them to achieve the Early Learning Goals before transitioning into Year One.
